Autumn is a season of transformation. The air grows crisp, the days shorten, and nature shows us the art of letting go. Just as the trees release their leaves, we too are invited to shed what no longer serves us and create space for clarity, nourishment, and renewal.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), autumn belongs to the Metal Element, governed by the Lungs and Large Intestine. These organ systems remind us how to receive and release—to breathe life in fully and let go with grace.
The Wisdom of the Lungs
The Lungs are considered the “delicate organ.” They are sensitive to dryness and to emotions, especially grief. Their partner, the Large Intestine, helps us release what is unnecessary—physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
When grief is acknowledged, it can transform into clarity. Autumn becomes a season of refinement: distilling what is essential and letting go of the rest.
Archetype of Autumn: The Wise Gatherer
Autumn carries the archetype of Demeter, the Wise Gatherer. She teaches us to harvest the fruits of our labor, store nourishment for the winter, and release what has completed its cycle.
Her lesson: We cannot carry everything into winter. We must choose what truly nourishes us.
Herbal & Nutritional Allies
Astragalus – The Protector
This root strengthens Lung Qi, builds immunity, and creates resilience. Often simmered in soups and broths, it is a trusted tonic for the colder months.
Pear – The Gentle Moistener
Pear moistens Lung Yin, soothes dryness, and calms irritation. Baked pears with honey, cinnamon, and ginger are a traditional Chinese remedy—warming, moistening, and sweet medicine for both body and spirit.
Pomegranate – The Circle of Abundance
Across cultures, pomegranate symbolizes fertility, abundance, and reciprocity. Each seed is a reminder that what we release returns to the earth, transformed into nourishment.
Acupressure for Autumn
Support your lungs and immune system with these simple points:
LU1 (Central Treasury): On the chest below the collarbone; opens the lungs and eases grief.
LU7 (Broken Sequence): On the inner wrist; clears the chest, supports breath, strengthens immunity.
CV17 (Sea of Tranquility): Center of the chest; calms emotions, balances heart and lungs.
LI4 (Joining Valley): Webbing between thumb and index finger; promotes release, relieves tension.
LI11 (Pool at the Bend): Outer crease of the elbow; clears heat, supports immune function.
Spend 1–2 minutes pressing each point while breathing deeply.
Breathwork for Letting Go
A simple Lung Qi Breath can help you align with the season:
Inhale through your nose, filling the lungs fully.
Exhale through your mouth with a long sigh, releasing tension.
Visualize grief leaving with the exhale and clarity entering with the inhale.
This breath can be practiced anytime you feel heavy, anxious, or in need of release.
Reflection for Your Inner Autumn
Journal prompts to help you align with the season:
What am I ready to release before winter?
What will nourish me most deeply in the months ahead?
What boundaries do I need to honor?
How can I transform grief into wisdom?
Autumn is not just about endings, it’s about refinement. With the help of seasonal herbs, acupressure, and breathwork, we can release what is complete, gather what is essential, and carry clarity into winter.
Just as the trees let their leaves fall with ease, may we too release with grace and step into the next season nourished and renewed.
